SUMMERFIELD Velma Odena Somers Coleman, 89, of Summerfield, died peacefully at her home and went to be with her Heavenly Father on September 5, 2016. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 8 at Reedy Fork Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Velma was born on May 24, 1927 in Wilkes County to William Theodore Somers and Ada Mitchell Somers. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, Charles Evin Coleman; brother, William Ted Somers; and stepmother, Grace Souther Somers.Velma was a wonderful mother to her daughters, Teresa Coleman Miller and Katrina Coleman Whitt and son-in-law, Jay Whitt. She delighted in her four grandsons, Grant Coleman Miller and wife, Morgan; Joseph Hunter Whitt and wife, Hunter Nicole; Jordan Quinn Miller, and Parker Coleman Whitt and wife, Erin. She enjoyed visits from her great-granddaughter, Brynn Coleman Miller, and great-grandson Jonas Olsen Whitt. She is also survived by brothers, Grady Somers and Gerald Somers and wife, Clara; a sister, Evalene Henderson and husband, Gene, and sisters-in-law, Kate Somers, Nada Coleman, and Rachel Campbell. Velma was an active member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church for 54 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years.
