Eliphalet Reed, b. 12 May, 1834; m. Elmira Matthews, 15 May, 1856; b. 29 Jan., 1841, dau. of Charles M. and Katherine (Clayton). She d. 22 Nov., 1917; he d. 27 July, 1927, in his 94th year,--the last of his family and of his generation. He was Adelphia's grand old man and a lifelong resident of that place. A wheelwright by trade, a farmer and local preacher. Member of Bethesda M. E. Church from boyhood and for more than 40 years a licensed exhorter; Sunday School supt. for more than a decade. He was the first of his family to vote the Republican ticket, casting his vote for Fremont and Dayton; after reaching his majority he never missed voting at a presidential election. He enjoyed hiking and three years before his death, June 8th, he became bewildered while traversing his big tract of woodland near Adelphia and slept in the woods all night. Nearly a hundred searchers and a police hound went in search of him and next morning he was located deep in the wood, none the worse for his experience. He was a fine hunter and a good marksman.
