22 Feb 1897
Two of Shelby Township's oldest citizens have passed away, John H. Means and Elliott J. Vestile, the former having died February 14th, and the latter February 16th. Living close neighbors nearly all their lives, they passed to the great beyond two days apart. Both funerals took place at the M. E. Church in Canaan, one on the 15th and the other on the 18th.
Elliott J. Vestile was born March 10, 1820--consequently he was nearly seventy seven years old. During his life he held various positions of public trust, in all of which the duties were performed with unswerving honor and fidelity. About fifty years ago he was united in marriage to Lavina Buchanan, daughter of David Buchanan. To them were born five children, four of whom are still living to comfort their mother. Some fifty years since he united with the Christian Church at Salem, of which organization he remained a consistent member until his death. Rev. Jas. W. Lanham was the officiating minister, finding the subject matter for this sermon in the 1st Epistle of Peter, 1st chapter, 2nd, 3rd and 4th verses. Mr. Lanham, in giving a sketch of the life of the deceased, remarked that he had received him into the church and that he, himself, had administered the ordinance of baptism to Mr. Vestile, half a century ago.
