George William Townsend, son of Amos Townsend and Caroline Cline, was born on 05 Apr 1865 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL. He died on 20 Apr 1956 in Manistee, Manistee, MI. He married Amanda Angeline Derry on 24 Nov 1886 in Sangamon County, IL.

Amanda Angeline Derry, daughter of Theodore Wanders Derry and Eleanor Jane Bashaw, was born on 27 Feb 1866 in Mechanicsburg, Sangamon, IL. She died on 22 Mar 1924 in Norman, Manistee, MI.

Notes for George William Townsend
1870 US Federal Census:
George is living in Clear Lake, Sangamon, IL with his mother Caroline Townsend, maternal grandmother Sybrina (Susannah) Cline, and siblings: Lewis, Philip, Pleasant, Henry and Ely (Eli) - he is age 5.

1880 US Federal Census:
George is still in Clear Lake, Sangamon, IL with his mother Caroline and brothers: Elijah (Pleasant), Grover (Henry) and Eli. He is age 13, attending school and both of his parents are listed as being born in Ohio.

Illinois Marriages, 1851-1900:
George W. Townsend, male
Spouse Name: Amanda A. Derry
Marriage Date: 24 Nov 1886
Marriage County: Sangamon
Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records located at Springfield, IL

1900 US Federal Census (I am quite certain this is George and his family despite the spelling errors and error in where his parents were born - months and year of birth match for all of them):
George is living on 186 Canalport Ave in Chicago Ward 7, Cook, IL listed as George Thomson, with wife An (Amanda Angeline), daughter Violet (Viola) and a boarder Lenard Sanders. He was married in 1886, he is employed with his occupation given as 'Shipping', he can read and write and owns the home he lives in.

We know that in 1909, George, who was at that time a streetcar conductor in Chicago, moved his family from Sangamon County, IL to Flint, MI.

1910 US Federal Census:
George is living North East of Wellston in Stronach, Manistee, MI with his wife Amanda, children: Viola and Carl and a hired hand Josper C. Schnopp. His parents are both listed as being born in Ohio, he is listed as employed with his occupation farmer. He owns his farm which does have a mortgage on it, he can read and write and has been married for 24 years.

1920 US Federal Census:
George is living in Norman twp., Norman, MI with his wife Amanda and son Carl (who was actually not in the household at this time having left and ending up in Flint, MI). His father is now listed as from New York and his mother as from Pennsylvania, he is farming his own land and can read and write.

I have not been able to find George in the 1930 census; his wife had passed away and he is not living with either of his children.

1940 US Federal Census:
George is living at 515 Davis St in Manistee, Manistee, MI in the home of his son Carl, who was at sea at the time of the census. Also living in the household were his daughter-in-law Gladys and grandchildren: Geraldine, Shirley, Letha, Clarence and Milo. He lived at this same address in 1937. The highest grade he completed as the 8th grade and he did have an income from 'Other Sources'.

1940 Manistee, Michigan City Directory
George W. Townsend, Address: 515 Davis

1950 US Federal Census
W. George Townsend was living in Manistee, Manistee, MI (515 Davis St.) with his daughter-in-law Gladys Townsend, and his grandsons Clarence and Milo. He is 85 years old, widowed, unable to work, and the highest grade he completed was 8th grade.

George is remembered as a stern man who strongly disapproved of his daughter's marriage. He spent several years living with his son Carl's family and then, ironically, spent his final years in a nursing home sharing a room with the son-in-law he disliked.

George's death certificate indicates the causes of his death as: Arteriosclerosis Heart Disease, Generalized Arteriosclerosis (both suffered from for 4-5 years) and senility.
