Kala Katherine Reynolds Farris, born June 3, 1945, passed away on August 8, 2015 in Hurley, MS. Kala was born in Yazoo City, MS and was a longtime resident of Jackson County, MS, presently residing in Hurley, MS. Kala retired from Ingalls Shipbuilding in 2007.
A 1963 graduate of Moss Point High School, Kala treasured the friendship of her classmates. Kala remained active in planning and coordinating class reunions throughout the years and always looked forward to seeing everyone and spending time with them. In between the class reunions, Kala enjoyed traveling and experiencing life with them. In recent years, she rarely returned from one trip before she began planning the next one.
Kala also carried out a passion she shared with her husband, Don – a love for cars. They helped start a car club, “The Magnolia Classic Cruisers” of Jackson County, MS, where they made a lot of friends. Kala remained active after her husband passed away four years ago. She served as secretary for the car club, but anyone who knew her knows she did so much more than keeping up with paperwork. She participated in planning all of the local events and made sure everyone was having a good time.
Kala’s true love was for her family. For years, Kala attended numerous school functions, award ceremonies, ballgames, and family vacations. She devoted her life to supporting the people she loved. Around the ballfields, her booming voice showed her passion and love for the game and for her children and grandchildren. She will be missed by them dearly.
Kala was an active member of Wade Baptist Church and was involved in fundraising for various charities. Among those, she helped raise money for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight, and for the last three years, Kala served as a volunteer and was thankful to travel with veterans on two separate occasions to Washington, D.C.
Kala was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Farris and son David Allen Monroe Capers and her parents, James H. Reynolds and Mildred and William Lippincott. Kala is survived by her children, Lavon (Tricia) Capers of Ocean Springs, MS; Kala Jean Farris of Hurley, MS; Donald “Doni” (Susan) Farris II of Hurley, MS; grandchildren, David Capers, Kyle Capers, Meagan Farris, Madison Farris, Trenton Farris and Tyler Farris; siblings, Janice Reynolds Moore and Charles B. Reynolds of Hurley, MS; nephews, Chuck Reynolds, Robert A. Beasley, Alex Moore, and Adam Moore as well as cousins, other relatives, and numerous friends.
Visitation will be at Wade Baptist Church, Hwy. 63, Wade, MS, from 11:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2015.
