Ottoman Sultan. Mehmed V, who was born Mehmed Resad, reigned as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 to 1918. He lived in seclusion for most of his life before becoming sultan on the abdication of his brother Abdulhamid II in 1909. Mehmed served mostly as a figurehead after both the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 and the 1913 Ottoman coup d'etat, which the gave the Three Pashas actual power. Although he was personally opposed, the Ottoman Empire entered the first World War on the side of the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). Mehmed, in his role as a caliph, formally declared a holy war against the Allied Powers on November 11, 1914. This declaration had no effect as many Arabs joined the Allies in an effort to oust the Ottoman Empire. By the time Mehmed passed away in July 1918, most of his empire had fallen to the Allies and he would not see the fall of Ottoman Empire.
