Jack Wayne Burns, 85, a much loved pastor, husband, father, brother, friend, went to be with the Lord on August 7, 2015 in San Angelo, Texas.
Jack Burns was born in Valley Mills on Nov. 25, 1929, the second son of Willie and Laura Edna Gunter Burns. He was married to Shirley Sanders on Dec. 16, 1972 in Reedley, Calif.
He surrendered to the ministry when he was 19 and was licensed to preach by his home church, First Baptist Church in Valley Mills. He graduated from Baylor University in Waco and Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth. He served as pastor at churches in Sherry, Oklahoma City, Okla., Portland, Ore., Fresno, Calif., El Cajon, Calif., Brownwood (Associate Pastor), and San Diego, Calif. over a period of 52 years. Jack also taught public school classes over a period of 15 years in Fresno, Calif. and Brownwood.
Jack’s love for people reached out to many, especially those that were in prison. He served as head chaplain of the Volunteer program of South Bay Detention Facility in Chula Vista, Calif. for 17 years, and as a volunteer chaplain at Ron Jackson Juvenile Detention Facility in Brownwood for three years. He corresponded and offered encouragement to many inmates through letters.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Burns of San Angelo; one son, Donald Alan Burns and wife Valerie of Fredericksburg, Va. and grandchildren, Kevin and wife Veronica and Kayla; one daughter, Nancy Dawn Smith and husband Bruce of Oklahoma City, Okla. and children Makenna, Kyle, and Jeff; a sister, Merle Goodwin of Brownwood; brothers, Earl Ray Burns and wife Marian of Silver Lake, Kan., and Johnny Burns of Valley Mills; sister-in-law, Bobbie Burns of Brownwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Laura Burns; and a brother, Bill Burns.
