John Helsten was born to Moses Helsten & Henrietta Thompson in Newhouse, Beaver, Utah. The Newhouse Ore vein had run out in 1910 and by the time John was born the town was well on it's way to becoming one of Utah's ghost towns. Along with many other Finn Families the Helsten's moved to Scofield to engage in Coal mining.
Raised in Scofield, John like many Carbon County children, attended a Presbyterian boarding high school in Mt. Pleasant Utah, named Wasatch Academy, graduating in the class of 1938.
With the advent of WWII, John entered military service on 9 Aug 1942 and became a member of the 11th Armored Division, 42nd Tank Battalion, A company (TEC 4 ASN 39028425).
In March 1945, fighting in the "Battle of the Bulge", the 11th Armored Division was moving across Germany to breakthrough to the Rhine River. During this campaign John's 42nd Tank Battalion was part of Combat Control A (CCA). As they approached the Rhine River, near Andernack, Germany, John's request to be the lead tank in the column and thereby reaching the Rhine first and was granted. On the 9th of March 1945, John's lead tank was disabled, and as he exited the tank trying to get to the 2nd tank in the column he was (KIA) killed in action by enemy fire.

John was 1st buried in the Temporary American Cemetery at Foy Belgium, When that Cemetery was evacuated in about 1946/48, at his mothers request Johns remains were returned to the United States and placed in the Scofield Cemetery.
