Funeral services for Johnny F. Bates are 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Locust Grove. The Reverend Jeff Blair and Shawn Bates will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hogan Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.

Bates was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Peggs, Okla., to Grover and Birdie (Cloud) Bates. He died Saturday, July 22, 2006, in Pryor. He was 88.

Bates graduated from Locust Grove High School and then attended college at Northeastern in Tahlequah. He was proud of the fact he held a state record for some time in the mile run. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He and his wife, the former Patricia Siegfried, were married for over 40 years. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1985.

Bates was a lifetime Locust Grove resident. Over the years he owned DX Stations in Salina, Locust Grove, and Pryor. During the 1960s, along with Joe Koelsch, he owned and operated the Locust Grove Sale Barn. Most of his years were spent as a rancher and farmer. He raised all types of livestock.

Bates was known for his well maintained garden, always working to get the first and best tomatoes and potatoes. He loved to read and to watch fireworks displays.

Bates is survived by six children: Coleene Carpenter and husband Jimmy of Skiatook, G. D. Bates and wife Almira of Skiatook, Bucky Bates and wife Marilyn of Locust Grove, Janice Wilson and husband Ray of Sperry, Judy Smith and husband Jack of Pryor, Fred Bates and wife Verna of Locust Grove, Barbara Covey and husband Stan of Rose, Connie Stacy and husband Jerry of Owasso, Bryce Bates and wife Pam of Locust Grove; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Grover and Birdie Bates, his wife: Pat Bates, one son Jimmy Bates, one granddaughter Sheila Williams, one grandson Steven Cooper, two brothers Amos and Jesse Bates, and two sisters Delilah Armontrout and Sylvia Bates.
