Williard Carpenter was one of Evansville's leading citizens greatest entrepreneurs. He made his fortune in real estate; was a memeber of the city council; built one of the town's first railroads; was an abolitionist and participant on the Underground Railroad by using his home to harbor slaves escaping to their freedom; and built Willard Library which is still in opperation today. His home also still exists and is used by WNIN, the local PBS station.
