ORLANDO MERTON LUMBERT

Orlando Merton Lumbert, lifelong resident of West Falmouth, died Monday morning, Sept. 19, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Stewart Harlow. Mr. Lumbert would have been 71 in just a week. He recovered from three previous sieges of pneumonia during his life but the fourth, caused by a fall into the water at Chappaquoit three weeks ago, proved too great a strain for his heart.

Mr. Lumbert was born September 26, 1867, in the old Crowell house in West Falmouth, the son of James Lincoln and Martha (Landers) Lumbert. He attended Falmouth schools and when only 18 sailed on the first of many whaling voyages. He was once a seaman on the whaler, Charles W. Morgan. On September 19, 1889, he married Miss Bertha Moody, who died several years ago. Mr. Lumbert died on the date of his wedding anniversary.

He was an expert yachtsman and in recent years was captain of Dr. Godwin M. Brown's boat. He was once racing captain for Charles M. Baker, former summer resident of Chappaquoit. Mr. Lumbert was a charter member of the former Nobska Lodge, Knights of Pythias. Besides his daughter, he leaves a sister, Mrs. James A. Bowman, a brother, Frank L. Lumbert, and two grandchildren, John Stewart Harlow, Jr., and Lawrence L. Harlow, all of West Falmouth. Funeral services were held from his home last Wednesday afternoon with Dr. Elihu Grant of Hayerford College, a friend for many years, officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery.
