Walter Fuhrmann was born in Fredericksburg,Texas on July 21, 1924, the son of Felix Fuhrmann and Olga Henke Fuhrmann. He lived in Fredericksburg all of his life. He attended local public schools and graduated from Fredericksburg High School.

Entering Texas A&M University in 1941, he joined the Corps of Cadets and rose to the rank of Cadet Captain. He graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a major in Animal Husbandry. He was immediately called into the service and shipped overseas to Germany where he served for over two years as a First Lieutenant. After his release from the Army, he remained active in the reserve where he rose to the rank of Captain. Returning to Fredericksburg, he accepted a teaching position with the Veterans Vocational Program, where he taught for over six years. In 1950, during his teaching career, he married Leola Dietrich. Walter then began his life's vocation. Accepting a position with the City of Fredericksburg as the superintendent of the Water and Wastewater Department where he worked for 31years, wearing many hats including Building Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, City Engineer and Park Construction /Superintendent while managing all utilities for the city. He was highly successful in planning and developing expanded utilities and other city services for a community growing to a full-fledged city. In 1985, he retired from long time service to the City,but continued ranching on land that had been in the family for over a hundred years. Known as the family heritage program, his ranch was part of a land grant from the first governor of Texas. He then obtained his real estate license and had a second career selling real estate. Always active in civic affairs, Walter served as president of the Texas Water Utilities Association, director of the Southwest Section of the American Water Works Association and served as both chairman and program chairman for 26 years of the Hill Country Water Utilities Association.

He continued to serve his community as a director of the Chamber of Commerce, director of the Gillespie County Soil and Water Conservation District, director of the Gillespie County Fair Association, director of the Gillespie County 4-H and FFA Livestock Show Association, lifetime member of Rotary International and many other civic and community functions. Walter was also active in church affairs. He was a long time member of Bethany Lutheran Church, past president of the Bethany Lutheran Church Congregation, and served on numerous committees including the building committee when a new annex was added and when the new Fellowship Hall was built. Down through the years he has been the recipient of many citations and acknowledgements of his outstanding accomplishments, not the least of which was his selection by the Fredericksburg Junior Chamber of Commerce as the Outstanding Young Man of the Year. Additionally, he was selected as the Conservationist of the year by the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce. Walter's wife Leola died in 1990. He married Harriet Bierschwale in 1993 and they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on October 9, 2013.

Walter is survived by his wife, a son Dale Fuhrmann and Cathy Etz, a daughter Denise Kunz and her husband, Kevin, a step-son Bryan Bierschwale and his wife, Carrie, a step­ daughter Lindy Haley and her husband, Mike all of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchi ldren ,step-great grandchildren and a brother Leroy Fuhrmann and sister-in-law Margie Fuhrmann of College Station. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Donna Kolmeier, two sisters Evelyn Dittmar and Esther Sturdevantand a brother Fred Fuhrmann.

Funeral services for Walter Fuhrmann will be 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 11th, in Bethany Lutheran Church. Graveside services will follow in Der Stadt Friedhof. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Monday, August 10th & 7 a.m.- 12 noon in Fredericksburg Funeral Home, as well as 1:30-2:30 p.m. in church. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Hennig Property, Rotary International, or the charity of one’s choice.
