YOUNGSTOWN - George A. Smail, 89, of the city’s west side, passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 6, 2015, at his home following a brief illness.

George was born Dec. 19, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of the late Benjamin and Amelia Smail, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Smail was a graduate of Chaney High School, and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed in San Diego and in the South Pacific.

George worked as a crane operator with Republic Steel for 37 years, and prior to that had worked as a journeyman carpenter.

He enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing, which he continued to enjoy through this past winter. Mr. Smail made his own fishing lures and enjoyed working in his workshop and in his yard. He had a great love of animals, and provided a home for stray dogs when their owners couldn’t be found. He was also a fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns.

George was of the Catholic faith, and in his younger years was affiliated with St. Brendan Church in Youngstown.

George’s beloved wife of 64 years, Delores J. Long Smail, whom he married Dec. 31, 1947, passed away July 13, 2012.

He leaves three sons, George F. (Anna) Smail of Canfield, who were also Mr. Smail’s caregivers, Bruce D. (Phyllis) Smail of Columbiana, and Mark J. Smail of New Waterford; three grandchildren, Amy Smail (fiancé Chris Dalman), Lori (Sam) Gibbons, and Amanda (David) Ronyak; and great-grandchildren, Matea and Makenzie Ronyak, and Finn Gibbons.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Smail, who was Mark’s twin, and a sister, Sally Atkinson.

Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, where George will be laid to rest next to his wife.
