Mary Elizabeth Burford

54, Died peacefully on July 8, after a seven-year struggle with cancer.

Mary Burford was born in Baltimore, Maryland to William Skelly Burford, noted scholar and poet, and Lolah Mary Egan Burford, a prominent author. She graduated from the Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas and pursued independent studies at Connecticut College and Southern Methodist University, as well as the College of Santa Fe. Mary moved to Santa Fe in January of 2000 and soon became a valued member of the city's arts community. As an employee at CCA and a volunteer at The Screen, the Chamber Music Festival, and other venues, she brought an infectious enthusiasm to every occasion, especially the screenings of her beloved noir films. When illness overtook her, her joie de vivre persisted undiminished. To the amazement of her doctors and friends, she outlived one dire prognosis after another, becoming something of a local legend. She was regarded as "the kind of patient who came to the Cancer Center and made the staff feel better." Her younger son William Flanary Zuniga preceded her in death. She is survived by her elder son Adam Burford Zuniga of New York City, her sisters Harriet Redwine of Fort Worth and Matilda Clements of Oklahoma City, and her constant companion Bosky. The family wishes to thank the community of Santa Fe; in no other place could Mary have lived so fully. Special thanks to all the friends and caregivers that lent a loving hand in most difficult times. A gathering in her memory will be held at Mary's home on Friday, July 15 from 4 - 6 p.m. Donations to the family, the Santa Fe Cancer Institute Foundation or Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival are gratefully accepted.
