Thomas Murray, Sr. was born about 1725 in Baltimore Co., British Province of Maryland. Baltimore County was established in 1659. Thomas was the son of Morgan Murray (1684-1741) and Sarah Hawkins (1698-1748). Both of his parents were born in Baltimore County, lived and died there.

His father, Morgan, was the son of James Murray (1665-1704) and Jemima Morgan (1668-1711). James had immigrated to America as a youth (abt 11), possibly as an apprentice or bond servant, in 1676 from Perthshire, Scotland. Morgan's mother, Jemima, was born in Baltimore Co., British Colony of Maryland where she and James lived and died. Her father was Captain Thomas "Tom" Morgan (1639-1697) who had immigrated to America from Wales about 1645-65 (?).

Thomas Murray's mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Joseph Hawkins (1665-1725) and Elizabeth Griffith (1675-1752). They too, were born in the British Colony of Maryland.

About 1745, Thomas married Margaret Jones. Also born in Baltimore County, she was the daughter of Maryland natives, Phillip Jones (1701-1761) and Jemima Murray (1695-1725). Thomas and Margaret had nine known children. They were James Murray (1846- ?), Mary Murray (1849-abt 1840), Uroth Murray (abt 1752/55-1806?), Thomas Murray, Jr. (1754-1835), Anne Murray (1755-aft 1805), Sarah Murray (abt 1760-1830), Christopher Murray (1762-1823), Morgan Murray (1764-1830) and Shadrack Murray (1765-1841). There may have been another unknown child or two who died at/near childbirth or who did not survive childhood.

About 1784/85, Thomas moved with members of his family, and probably some other families as well, to Washington County in North Carolina's Western Territory. The land that he settled on became part of Washington Co., Tennessee in 1796.

Thomas died around 1805 at his home near Sinking Springs near the present day community of Gray in Washington Co., TN, at the age of 80. Today, Gray is about 10 miles from present day Johnson City.

Thomas wrote his last will and testament on Sept. 5, 1802. Actually, he had someone (lawyer ?) write it for him as Thomas apparently could not read or write due to a lack of formal schooling. This was not uncommon in those days. He signed his will with "his mark" (T). His will was proven in May of 1805.

Thomas was buried on his farm located near present day Sinking Creek in Washington Co., TN. Most likely, he had just a field stone or wooden marker for a headstone. Over two centuries have passed since his death and his grave site, as well as other early family burials, are no longer marked. The land has been sold and divided many times since his death.
