Craig Allen Cummings

February 13, 1956
Greeley, Colorado
June 12, 2015
Everett, Washington

Craig Cummings loved God, loved his family, and loved to sing. He dedicated his life to his family, faith, music, and the education of young people. The second son of Doyle and Corrine Cummings, born February 1956, he heroically fought advanced melanoma for eight months and passed away June 12, 2015 in Everett, WA.
Born to a family of musicians in Colorado, Craig spent much of his childhood in the choirs of his father, who was also a musician and educator. He, in turn, passed these vocations on to his own children. Craig attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, majoring in Music Education. He later received his Master of Music in contemporary church music from Seattle Pacific University. While attending PLU he met the love of his life, Deborah. After graduation they were married on June 20th, 1981, spending the next 34 years of their lives together.
During that time he taught thousands of students at many public and private institutions, including Marysville Middle School, Mount Vernon High School, Northwest Boychoir, Seattle Girlchoir, and most recently North Middle School in Everett. He taught his students not only to be better musicians, but also to be better people. Craig also had a passion for music ministry and served as music director at several churches, including the past seventeen years at St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Everett. His love of music carried over to his family, who proudly carry on his legacy of singing for God and one another.
Outside of his musical vocations, Craig was a family man. A father of seven, he deeply cared for and abundantly provided for his wife and children; a task which was dear to his heart. His legacy of sacrifice and perseverance for the good of his family is inspiring to all fathers. He was entering his prime as a grandfather of six, with undoubtedly many more grandchildren to come.
Among colleagues, Craig was known as a smiling, kind, and ardent supporter of all he came in contact with. He worked hard for his students and coworkers. He gave as much love as he could to everyone he came in contact with, and left all better for having known him. His recent motto, and one he used in his fight with cancer, involved sharing and using “heart energy.”
He loved the outdoors, including camping and gardening. He loved to experience nature and all it had to offer. He loved playing basketball with his coworkers and sons. He was a huge fan of epic films with loud soundtracks that he could enjoy in surround sound. He played guitar, bassoon, piano, and, when appropriate, the kazoo. He never was one to back down from a pun.
For those of us who knew and loved him, Craig’s life was tragically short. But as we look back at all the joy he brought into the world, we see what a bounty we have been able to receive and we are thankful.
Craig is survived by his wife, seven children, six grandchildren, his mother, two brothers, and two sisters.
