TUPELO – Meredith “Sis” Young Austin, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at her home in Tupelo after a long illness. She was born April 21, 1919, to the late T.S. and Lillie Stalnaker Young. She graduated from Smithville High School in 1936. She lived many years in San Leandro, Calif., before returning to Tupelo 24 years ago. She was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and a retired civilian telephone operator with the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading and making crafts, especially Christmas ornaments.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Hicks officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Faith Mausoleum at Lee Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Austin, whom she married Sept. 9, 1953; a sister, Katherine Philips of Tupelo; four nieces, Patti Brock of Saltillo, Janet Harris of Tupelo, Joanne Salizar of Connecticut and Rene Austin of New York; a nephew, Joel Philips of Tupelo.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Everett R. Young, and two brothers-in-law, Joe Philips and Charles Austin.

Pallbearers will be Jason Carlock, Joel Philips, David Brock, Tom Wood, Tom Barnett and John Castles.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.
