Following the death of his mother, Frances (Leach) Calkins, in or about 1730, young Samuel Calkins was placed into the care of a childless couple, Samuel and Bathsheba Williams, by the church in New London, Connecticut. In 1737, Samuel Williams adopted Samuel Calkins who became known from that point forward as Samuel Williams Calkins.

On October 27, 1757, Samuel married Elizabeth Avery and, from May 1, 1758 to November 20, 1758, he served in the Connecticut Troops, 4th Company, during the French & Indian War.

Samuel and Elizabeth had 4 known children (Isaac, Elizabeth, Zirviah and John) and later resided in Stafford and Somers, Tolland, Connecticut.
