He was born in Tullos to the union of his parents, Harvey E. "Woodie" Blackman and Ruth Otis, but the family moved to White Oak during the oil boom early in his life.
After graduating from White Oak High School, he attended Kilgore Junior College before serving in the U. S. Army in the Korean Conflict, where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart.
After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a Mechanical Engineering degree, Woody worked in Houston for an industrial company for many years.
He eventually returned to his roots in White Oak to start his own business and live on the very same street where he lived as a child. He loved to collect coins and dig deep into the family genealogy, and researched the family histories of many friends and acquaintances, as well as much of the history of Sun Camp - the street originally home to so many residents of the Sun Oil Company employees.
He also started a scholarship fund for the Alumni Association of White Oak Schools, which he organized the fundraising and administration of for many years.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, in the Oak Grove Cemetery near Rhinehart, where he rejoined with his father and mother, and many other family members that have gone before him.
