Betty Bainbridge was born May 8, 1923, to George and Evelyn Callenius of Granville. She was raised on the family farm, attended country school during her primary years and graduated from Paullina High School. Betty married Dudley Bainbridge of Paullina in 1941. They lived and farmed near Paullina and together raised three children. After her children became adults, she attended college at Northwestern in Orange City. Betty continued to care for those around her by becoming a special education teacher and later a nurse.

Betty enjoyed gardening and dancing; which she accomplished well and of course singing -- which she did not. She was also an ardent reader, enthusiastic cook and avid garage-saler. "Grandma B" was always ready to put on a feast for family and friends and could whip up a meal with anything from rabbit and elk to more traditional Iowan cuisine, including family-favorite "Pride of Iowa" cookies. During retirement, Betty lived in Okoboji with her late husband, Gale Bainbridge. Betty was able to fulfill a dream of seeing the world, traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Europe and Asia.

Betty is survived by her sons, James Bainbridge of Henderson, Nev.; David (Cyndi) Bainbridge of Arvada, Colo.; her daughter, Georgene (Bill) Bainbridge-Matthew of Bakersfield, Calif. and her four grandchildren, Benjamin, Jessica, Alexander and Garret.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and brother, Donald Callenius.

On July 27, 2012, Betty lost her long battle with Alzheimer's. During that battle she was comforted by many neighbors and community members who assisted her in coping with diminishing capabilities, including the employees of Keelson Harbour, Hilltop Care Center and Home Again. The family is grateful to those in her church who provided love, compassion and most importantly companionship during her illness.
