He was born on May 23, 1924, in Springfield, Missouri, to the late Elvin B. and Bernice E. Abernathy Appleby.
He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church, the Oak Cliff Lions Club in Dallas and the Tyler Lions Club. He was formerly employed by Sears Roebuck Co and was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps.
He is survived by his son, Tim Nelson, of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter, Linda Potter, of Overland Park, Kansas; granddaughters, Anna Bailey, of Mission, Kansas, Laura Jane and Cameron Linn, of McPherson, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Maya Bailey, Emery Bailey, Takoda Linn and Jackson Linn; and several nieces and nephews.
