Funeral services were held Saturday, July 29, at 10:30 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with Rev. Roy Hjelmaas officiating. Grave side services were held at 1 p.m. at Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center. Mittelstadt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Merle was born February 26, 1928, on a farm near Buffalo Center the son of R.E. and Anna (Onken) Aukes . He attended the Congregational Church of Buffalo Center with his parents, six brothers and five sisters.
He was united in marriage to Inez Joy Ites on August 20, 1949. They farmed in the Woden/Crystal Lake area until moving to Lake Mills in the early1960s. During his life in Lake Mills Merle worked ten years as a foreman for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, later at Certainteed, and the last several years at Nelson's Chevrolet. He was a member of the Asbury Methodist
Church.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Jeanie and Brad Grotewold, Lake Mills; four sons and their spouses, Harland and Sara Aukes, Buffalo Center, Dennis and Sandy Aukes, LaCrosse, WI, Larry and Deb Aukes, Buffal Center, Mark Aukes, Forest City; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; step-mother, Katherine Aukes, Buffalo City; five brothers, Don Aukes, Conway, AR, Ray Aukes, Buffalo Center, Robert Aukes, Aldeo, IL, Ervin Aukes, Menifee, AR, Rollin Aukes, Kiester, MN, and Loren Aukes, Forest City; three sisters, Mildred Donjte, Forest City, Ruby Hofbauer, Forest City, and Mary Khowassah, Iowa City; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, R. E. and Anna; sister, Lillian Weaver; twin sister, Maxine Harms; wife, Joy; and an infant son, Roy.
Pallbearers were his brothers , Don Aukes, Ray Aukes, Robert Aukes, Ervin Aukes, Rollin Aukes, Loren Aukes.
