He graduated from Wofford College and received his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1955. After graduate school he worked with the Atomic Energy Commission (Department of Energy) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1962, he relocated to the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce as Assistant Director of Labor Relations and later moved as Director to the Labor Relations Department of the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce. In late 1969, he joined the Carpet and Rug Institute as Executive Vice President. In 1972 Chesney established a corporation know as Convention Planners International and Travel Planners International which assisted companies and trade associations in developing plans for conventions and incentive travel.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and participated in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. He also served during the Korean War as an officer in the U.S. Army after graduating college ROTC.
He was a longtime Presbyterian serving both as a deacon and an elder at First Presbyterian Marietta. He is member of the Marietta Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years Peggy Barker Chesney; son Stephen and his wife Beatrice and their sons Jake and William; son Mark and his wife Eleana and their children Rachel, Philip and David; son Peter and his wife Jana and their daughters Ella and Ada.
Burial was a private morning service at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with Reverend Dr. James Speed officiating. The Memorial Service was held at Marietta First Presbyterian Church. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta was in charge of arrangements.
