LIVINGSTON, NY - Robert J. Tator, 76, of Livingston, NY, formerly of Rhinebeck, died Tuesday, October 3, 2000, at the Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on March 25, 1924, he was the son of James and Lona VanDeBogart Tator. On August 8, 1998 in a bi-plane over Red Hook he married the former Denise Corwin Howard. She survives at home. Mr. Tator owned and operated Stark-Tator Fuel Oil Company in Rhinebeck with his partner, Tom Stark, for many years. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served during World War II in Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. Mr. Tator was a member of Montgomery Post 429 American Legion, Rhinebeck, NY and the Red Hook post #7765 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Tator was a master mechanic, and generously offered his services to help anyone he could. He received his aircraft mechanic license at Roosevelt School of Aviation, and held a private pilot license. H started Skypark Airport in Red Hook with Tom Stark in the early 1960s. Mr. Tator was actively involved with Cole Palens Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome for thirty years as a mechanic, showman, and caretaker. Many of the vintage automobiles and motorcycles at the Aerodrome were rebuilt by him. He also played the role of the Keystone Cop at the Aerodromes airshows to the delight of the spectators. Mr Tator was involved with stock car racing for many years, and was a well known name on the Northeast racing circuits. He was also involved with the preservation of vintage sprint cars, which he maintained and drove in exhibition races for the last fifteen years. In 1949 he won the Mid-Hudson Valley Racing Championship at the Rhinebeck Speedway, and was a member of the Atlantic Coast Old Time Racing Club. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sally Underhill, Poughkeepsie, NY; sister - brother-in-law, Carolyn and Dudley Philhower, Germantown, NY; two grandchildren Sarah Underhill and Brian Underhill, both of Poughkeepsie, NY; four step-daughters, Margery McGill, Craryville, NY, Allison Pidoto, Hopewell Junction, NY, Madlyn Howard, Germantown, NY and Rosann Howard, Poughkeepsie; one step-son, Geoffrey Howard, Livingston, NY and one niece and two nephews.
