John W. Mayhugh, 83, passed away at home in Warrenton on Monday, July 27, 2015.

He was born Sept. 22, 1931, at Pin Oak Farm in Greenwich, Va., to the late James Lewis and Ella Virginia Mayhugh.

Mr. Mayhugh graduated from Brentsville District High School in 1948. He enrolled in Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1949 and graduated in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in poultry science. He was captain of the Corps of Cadets Regimental Band, “The Highty-Tighties,” his senior year. His proudest accomplishment was the winning of the Gold Cup (first place) in President Dwight D. Eisenhower's inaugural parade with The Highty-Tighties in January 1953. Mr. Mayhugh two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Bliss, El-Paso, Texas, Fort Belvoir and Thule, Greenland.

In 1956, he accepted a position with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service as assistant county agent in charge of the 4-H program in Fauquier. In 1959, he became an independent agricultural consultant, affiliated with Brookside Farms Laboratories of New Knoxville, Ohio. He worked, doing soil testing and animal nutrition consulting, with many farms in Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William counties. Well known and respected in the agricultural community, Mr. Mayhugh worked in this business until his passing.

He was a member of the Greenwich Presbyterian Church, where served as elder, cemetery trustee, Pastor Nominating Committee member and sang in the choir. He was a current member of the Warrenton United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and was lay reader on occasion. Mr. Mayhugh sang with the Warrenton Chorale for 40 years.

He was a captain in the Virginia National Guard and instrumental in founding the National Guard unit in Warrenton. He served on the Warrenton Planning Commission for many years and as a board member of the 4-H Center near Front Royal. Mr. Mayhugh was a Kentucky Colonel and an enthusiastic football fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Washington Redskins.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, June Manuel Mayhugh; a son, Doug Mayhugh and wife Janice of Brandy Station; a daughter, Lisa A. Gargiulo and husband Nicolas of Warrenton; seven grandchildren, Rebecca L.M. Delaney and husband Michael; Diane M. Coles and husband Stewart, Kelly E. Mayhugh, Stacy E. Mayhugh and fiancé David Bowser, Caspar A. Velasco, Eva E. Velasco and Marcus J. Velasco; two step-grandchildren, Nicolas Julia and Julia Gargiulo, and a great grandchild, Claire E. Delaney.

His sisters, Margaret M. Powell and June Mayhugh Smith, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, at Warrenton United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
