Ruth B. Visnaw, 66, of St. Ignace, passed away July 31, 2015, at her home on Pte. LaBarbe Rd in Moran Township. She had been ill with cancer for the past 11 months.

She was born August 12, 1948, one of 11 children born to James and Dorothy "Sis" (nee Bentgen) Brown in Petoskey.

Mrs. Visnaw was graduated from LaSalle High School in 1966. She completed two years of college as well as several banking schools.

She married Joe Visnaw October 14, 1972.

Mrs. Visnaw was employed as a mortgage loan officer at First National Bank in St. Ignace for many years. She retired in the fall of 2013. She also, at one time, owned and operated two businesses on Mackinac Island for more than 10 years, the Sleeping Turtle and the Wharf.

She was a loving and friendly person, and she could put together a dinner for 35 people in a very short time, and did so many times. She was a championship golfer, winning tournaments at the St. Ignace Golf and Country Club many times.

Mrs. Visnaw was a member of the St. Ignace United Methodist Church, where she held many offices and donated her time.She also taught Sunday School, and had a perfect attendance in Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; a son and his family, Joe Joe and Kari Visnaw of St. Ignace; two grandchildren, Trevor and Avery; five brothers and their families, Prentiss III "Giz" Brown, James and Krista Brown,Paul and Cindy Brown, AND Andy and Lora Brown, all of St. Ignace, and five sisters and their families,James Perry, Susan Pierson, Barbara Brown, Sally and John Herbon, all of St. Ignace, and Caroline "Lina" and Curtis Cheeseman of Northville. She is also survived by uncles and aunts and their families, Prentiss Brown, Jr., Paul and Meg Brown, Barbara and Bruce Laing, Bruce Bentgen, and Jack and Barb Bentgen and many nieces,nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Visnaw was preceded in death by aunts and uncles, Margaret "Peg" Brown, Ruth and Forest Evashevski, Patricia Watson, Hugh and Marianna Rudolph, Anne and Bill Bentgen, and Bob and Shirley Bentgen, and her grandparents, Senator Prentiss and Marion Brown and Captain Hilliard and Lucille Bentgen.

Services were Tuesday, August 4, at 1pm at the St. Ignace Methodist Church with Pastor Susie Hierholzer officiating. Visitation was from 10am to 1pm at the church.

Pallbearers were Mrs. Visnaw's five brothers , her two brothers-in-law, John Herbon and Curtis Cheeseman and a cousin, Charlie Brown.

Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery in St. Ignace.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Ignace United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace, which assisted the family with arrangements.
