Death Of Mrs. Jane Farnham
A Noble and Charitable Woman Passes Away at a Ripe Old Age
The death last night at 11 o'clock of Mrs. Jane Farnham at her residence, at 11th and M Streets Northwest, will be a great shock to her many friends. Mrs. Farnham has been so closely identified with Washington for upward of fifty years that her loss will be most keenly felt in every direction. In the direction of charities Mrs. Farnham was the embodiment of liberality and energy. She not only gave freely, but unsparingly used her time and strength in the accomplishment of good works. During the war when misery and suffering were rampant in this city Mrs. Farnham was especially identified with the local measures of relief. The Woman's Relief Association, which did such magnificent work in the hospitals during that period, owes its success in a large measure to the earnest efforts of Mrs. Farnham, who acted as Treasurer for the association, most of the meetings of which were held at her residence on M Street. Mrs. Farnham's activity did not cease with the war and since that time she has been untiring in church and charitable works. She was nearly eighty years of age, having been born in Maryland in 1811. She had lived in Washington for seventy-five years and at the residence at 11th and M Streets for fifty years. Her death is mainly due to the shock caused by the death of her daughter Jane on February 7, 1891.

The house in which the death occurred is one of the landmarks of Washington, having been occupied by Mrs. Farnham for fifty years. Mrs. Farnham leaves behind a number of children and many grown grandchildren. One of her daughters, since dead, married Mr. E.H. Miller, the well-known artist and another is the wife of Mr. Wright Curtis. Dr. Robert Farnham is the surviving son. The time of the funeral is as yet unsettled. The active pallbearers will be E.J. Stellwagen, A.E. Sturtevant, William H. Morrison, C.C. Glover, C.P. Swayze and E.S. Hall. The honorary pallbearers will be Louis Watkins, C.C. Willard, William B. Webb, William M. Shuster, C.S. Noyes and M.W. Beveridge.
