Edmund was born in 1835, son of of John and Serina (Rice) Covell. He died in 1919 and was buried in the Fentonville Cemetery, Chautauqua County, New York. He is buried in the Covell family plot next to his mother, Serena (Rice) Covell.

Edmund had three brothers all of whom fought in Union forces during the Civil War. They were Charles Covell, who served in Company F of the 9th New York Cavalry; Seth Warner Covell, Company H, 154th New York Infantry; and John Harrison Covell, who also served in the 154th New York Infantry as their First Sergeant. Charles is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dover, Chelan County, Washington. Seth is buried in Grand Army of the Rupublic Cemetery in Snohomish, Snohomish County, Washington & John Harrison is buried Newport Cemetery, Oldtown, Pend Oreille CDounty, Washington.

Edmund also had two sisters. Lucy Covell, wife of Alonzo J. Barton, a Civil War veteran who served as the Sergeant Major of the 9th New York Cavalry. His other sister was Louisa Covell, was married to Daniel Forbush. Lucy, Alonzo, Louisa and Daniel are all buried in Wayside Cemetery, Barron, Wisconsin.
