Joyce Baker Dobbins passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2015. She was born April 14, 1920 to Ruth Hays and Elmer Baker in the Hurricane Community of Claiborne Parish, LA. On December 25, 1945 she married Loy Henderson Dobbins. She was an unselfish wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Never an unkind deed or uttering an unkind word. Prior to her marriage she taught school in the Lisbon and Harris communities. After she and Henderson married she made a home for the family. After moving to Baton Rouge in 1966, she taught school at Baton Rouge HS and Denham Springs HS, later becoming guidance counselor at Albany HS. Joyce was a wonderful cook and loved preparing family dinners. She made the best chicken and dumplings, potato salad, and Karo pecan pie. One of her greatest joys was history, writing many short stories and several historical novels. She attended Faith Sunday School class at University Baptist Church. The Young-at-Heart meetings were very special to her. She was a member of Baton Rouge Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, LSU Retirees, and Red Stick Forestry. Pluck (Tom), and Hope Andrus; great-grandchildren Sidney, Anne Marie and Russ Gahagan; and former son-in-law Bob Andrus. She was preceded in death by parents, husband of 55 years, and brother Zane H. Baker. Funeral services conducted at University Baptist Church by Rev. George Haile on Tuesday, August 4. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. until services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Hurricane Cemetery in Claiborne Parish. The family would like to thank the staffs of Sunrise Assisted Living on Jefferson Highway, MedPass, and St. Joseph Hospice for loving care and concern.
