President of India. He served as the 7th President of India from 1982 to 1987. Before being President, Singh also served as India's Chief Minister and Union Home Minister. Prior to India's 1947 independence from England, he was given a five-year jail sentence in 1939 for an insurrectionary act. During his incarceration, he changed his name from Jarnail Singh to Zail Singh. He was given the title Giani or "Learned Man" for his scholarly mastery of the holy scriptures. He was the first president to be a Sikh, a member of a 15th-century religion in India. The June of 1984 assault by government troops on the Sikh's "Golden Temple" at the Harmandir Sahib complex placed Singh in a difficult situation with the Sikh community as hundreds were killed. He refused to sign into law a 1987 a bill permitting official censorship of private mail. Singh died in late 1994 following a car crash. He was cremated in the vicinity of Raj Ghat, India.
