DIED.
On the 27th of August. at his residence in Burke County, near Morganton, of the dropsy in the chest.Mr. Arthur Erwin, In the 83d year of his age. He lingered about three weeks with this disease, and died in the full hope of a happy immortality. He was a native of the state of Rocky River, and emigrated to North Carolina in his youth, with the first settlers of Rocky River, in what is now called Cabarrus county, but then Anson county; he removed to Burke county about 38 years ago. (about 28 years of age) He left an aged wife and four chlldren to lament his death. He had 44 grand-children, and 16 great grand-children. He was beloved by his neighbors and acquaintances.

An unusual thing about their graves is the fact that the headstones are to the south and the footstones are to the north. Other graves in the cemetery are turned in different directions. Arthur's inscription reads:

Here Lie
the Remains of
Arthur Erwin
who died the 27 of Aug. 1821
in the 83 year of his age
filial affection has erected
this tribute to his memory
