Charles was born June 7, 1842, at Carrol, Chautauqua County, New York. He died August 5, 1916, at Dover, Chelan County, Washington, aged 74 years, 1 month and 28 days and was buried there in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery

Charles never married, but on the family history sheet in his Pension file, dated July 9, 1915, he stated he had an adopted 10 years old son, who lived with him at Dover, Washington.

Charles known brothers and sisters were: Alberta Covell, who is buried beside him in the Fraternal Cemetery; Lucy Covell, who married Alonzo Barton, a veteran who served as Sergeant Major of the 9th Cavalry, who is buried in Wayside Cemetery, Barron, Wisconsin; Seth Warner Covell, a veteran of Company H of the 154th New York Infanty, who is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Snohomish, Washington; John Harrison Covell, a veteran who served as First Sergeant of Company H, 154th New York Infantry; and Edmond Covell, a veteran of Company A, 188th New York Infantry.

While living in Canton, Barron County, Wisconsin, Charles was accidentally shot in the thigh by William Foote, a neighbor who was deer hunting and mistook him for a deer. The bullet was removed and William took care of him until Charles recovered enough to resume his farming activities. He was on crutches for five months and had a limp the rest of his life.
