James was the son of Roswell Laughton and Esther Goss.
About 1854 he married Nancy Maria (Kemp) Clement, daughter of Stephen Kemp and Nancy Blodgett, and widow of Timothy Clement.
Their children were Esther Nancy and Frank A.
They also had her daughter, Almena Adelaide Clement, from her first marriage.
On Dec 10, 1861 in Canaan, VT he enlisted in the Civil War. He was a Private in Company E 3rd Vermont Infantry. He mustered out on July 3, 1862.
His wife, Maria Nancy, died on April 24, 1866 and is buried in Piper Hill Cemetery in Stewartstown, NH with her first husband.
On March 13, 1890 he filed for his pension. I believe he was still in Vermont when he filed, but not sure.
In 1891 he was widowed in Paquetteville Village, Compton, Quebec, Canada. His son Frank was there too with his wife and family. In 1881 Frank was in Hereford East, Compton, Quebec with his wife Adelaide living with her Haynes family. I couldn't find James in Canada before 1891. But I also can't find James in 1870 or 1880.
A death record can't be found for James to know where he died.
