Devoted daughter, proud mother, amazing sister, adored grandmother, beloved auntie, cousin and friend, Jan Therese Jones, 59, was born January 18, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by father, Leroy S. Jones, Sr.; daughter, Gloria Louise Jones and both paternal and maternal grandparents. Her formative years of education were at Holy Name and Annunciation Catholic Schools and she attended Lillis High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Jan accepted Christ early in life. She was baptized and was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. Later she became a devoted member of Joy Bells Ministries. Jan had a true passion for working with children, specifically in early childhood development, which led her to positions at Bishop Helmsing and St. Augustine's Catholic Schools. Her desire to work with children led her to Ryder Student Transportation. During the course of her employment she received numerous awards and accolades including the Dispatcher of the Year award. She continued her career in this industry until retiring in 2007. Jazzy J swore she was everybody's mama (including her own mom). She had numerous hobbies and interest. As a child, she loved playing tether ball and she liked to tell everybody about her brief track career (one day). In her teen years, she developed a love for roller skating, a talent that she skillfully mastered and she quickly became known as a “Skating Queen”. She loved dancing and was an exceptionally talented in the art of two-steppin'. She was also proud to be a part of the inaugural group of students in the drum class at her beloved Uncle Eddie Baker's Charlie Parker Academy of the Arts. Jan was instrumental in organizing and hosting just about anything and everything. She never stopped short of anything but the best. She always found a reason to celebrate. Jan absolutely loved to coordinate holiday gatherings, skating parties, and graciously hosted countless birthday parties. Jan coordinated summer activities such as swimming trips and picnics that always included not only family, but everybody in the neighborhood. Some of her legendary events included St. Augustine skating parties, the Haunted Cabin at Lake Placid, her annual Christmas Lights bus tour and the Ryder West parties where many of her friends still claim to this day. “Ms. Jan knew how to throw a party!” Jan loved to throw down in the kitchen. She was known for her big thanksgiving dinners, Soul Food Sundays, barbeques and family gatherings just because. Her door was always open and everyone was welcome. Jan was selfless, loyal and generous, and she loved her family tirelessly. She was always the caretaker and she looked out for everyone. Jan loved reading. She was a very creative person and loved decorating for every holiday, which inspired her final Christmas in July party. She was an avid sports fan and the most dedicated cheerleader, always there to support everyone. She was a devoted Band Mom to the F.L. Schlagle Marching Stallions, head team Mom to the Tigers Little League Association and team Mom to several other football, baseball and basketball teams over the years. Jan was also a proud honorary member of the Street Savage Motorcycle Club. She took great pride in staking claim and credit to being the driving force behind her brother making it to the NFL. She proudly states that her last HOORAH was at Super Bowl XXXIV. According to Jan, she was a great bowler and even had a couple of perfect 300 game banners hanging up at the ole king Louie East. Unfortunately, they are closed now so no one can verify that. Jan had a great sense of humor and was a great storyteller. She smiled with pride as she liked to remind us all, “I used to kick it!” Jan departed this life on January 25, 2015 at her home. She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Mary Josephine Jones of Kansas City, MO; eight children, Sean Jones, Sr., Keith Jones, Mary Jones, Whitney Jones, Brandon Jones, Frank Smith, Agnes Jones and Deanna Jones all of the city and one step-son, Brent Rice; four brothers, Leroy S. Jones, Jr. (Kathy) of Orlando, FL, G. Kevin Jones (Desiree) of the city, Michael Jones of Jefferson City, MO and Mark Jones (Antonia) of the city; four sisters, Patti Jones, Kimberly Jones, Monica Johnson (Ortega) and Maria Young (Tony) all of the city; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces; special family, Joy Bells Ministries, St. Augustine's 1st Student, Durham, Ryder, Gina Volmert, DaVita Grandview Dialysis and her extended 76th Street family. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to The Lupus Foundation. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors.
