Obituary is from the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, Va. website (www.curriefuneralhome.net), posted July 30, 2015:

Julia Ann “Julann” Jennings left this world on July 30, 2015 to be with God in Heaven.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, and two children, Frances Barton Wolf of Paris, France and Dennis Barton of Alexandria, Va.

She was born in Youngstown, Ohio on February 26, 1927. She attended St. Ann’s Grade School and Ursuline High School. She married Thomas E. Barton, a career Navy man, in September of 1949. They were stationed in Rota, Spain. They had two young children and were friends with another Navy family who also had a young boy and girl. In February 1964, both families went on a Sunday outing with the fathers and sons in one car and the ladies in another. The men were ahead of the ladies and stopped to allow them to catch up. They were stretching their legs when suddenly they heard a train whistle and saw their sons playing on the tracks. They rushed to save their sons and were struck by the train; all were killed except Julann’s son, Dennis, who was badly maimed.

After the tragedy, Julann returned to Youngstown to pick up the pieces and raise her two children. In 1968 she moved to Annandale, Virginia where she attended the Fairfax School of Nursing and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She then began work at Fairfax Hospital in the surgical recovery room. In 1979 she took a nursing position at the Bethesda Naval Hospital where she worked until 1988 when she went to work for the Drug Enforcement Administration. At DEA she worked in the Office of Registration where the doctors and other medical personnel are issued their DEA registration numbers.

She was predeceased by her sister, Rosemary Wade and her brother, James Ferranti. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Bill Wade, and many nieces and cousins.

Julann and Jack were avid sailors on the Chesapeake Bay and made many sailing trips from Annapolis to Rhode Island and Bermuda to Annapolis. On numerous occasions, she and Jack and their friends, Bob and Cyndi Fagan, did bare boat chartering of sailboats in the US and British Virgin Islands.

She retired in 1992 and she and Jack built a home on Greenvale Creek in Mollusk, Virginia. In April of 2000, after a lengthy engagement, she married John (Jack) Jennings. She was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

Julann is a charter volunteer of the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic joining the clinic when it was established in 1994. She also volunteered at the Red Cross blood drives and was a substitute nurse in the Lancaster County School System. She had also volunteered with the Virginia State Police in their Warsaw office. She enjoyed target shooting at the Rappahannock Pistol and Rifle Club shooting range.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held 11:00 a. m. Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. Family will receive friends 6:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. Tuesday, August 4 at Currie Funeral Home. A Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p. m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, P. O. Box 1694, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
