John William Campbell, 59, Topeka, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 25, 2014.
John was born January 6, 1955 in Honolulu, HI, the son of Captain George Willis and Leona Ruth (Miller) Campbell. He graduated from Topeka West High School in 1973, graduated cum laude from Washburn University in 1977 receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major in Political Science and History, received his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas, and his Juris Doctor from the University Of Kansas School Of Law in 1979. John was a Christian.
John’s career was dedicated to public service. His career began with the Ford County Attorney, where he was also deputized by the Ford County Sheriff’s Office. He was then employed by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, where he served as Chief Deputy Attorney General under Attorneys General Robert T. Stephan, Carla Stovall, and Derek Schmidt. He also had served as General Counsel under Insurance Commissioner, Sandy Praeger. He felt truly privileged to serve the people of the State of Kansas.
He was a member of the Kansas Bar Association, admitted to practice before the Kansas Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the District of Kansas, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and the United States Supreme Court. John had been a regular CLE speaker and a Charter Member of Western Hills Baptist Church. In recent years he had also served as an adjunct professor at Washburn School of Law.
John married Lisa Jo Hale on December 31, 1984 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his parents of Topeka; sisters, Rose (Grover) Miller, Kansas City, KS, Sue (Curtis) Irby, Wichita; many nieces and nephews, many friends, and beloved dogs.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at First Southern Baptist Church, 1912 SW Gage Blvd., in Topeka, Kansas. Private family inturnment will be at a later date.
John was always a very giving person, even to the end, donating his organs through the Midwest Transplant Network.
