Joel passed away on July 29, 2015 in Troy, Oakland County, MI at the wonderful age of 97 years, 1 month and 2 days. He was born in Reger, Sullivan County, MO, on June 27, 1918 to the late Joel Swanger and Doris Harvey DeWitt. During his youth he attended school in Reger and Milan, Sullivan County, MO as well as St. Louis, MO.

While attending Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO, he met his first wife Mary Frances Richardson and they married in 1938. Joel enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1943 and was still in training at the conclusion of WWII. Soon afterward he began working with Ford Motor Company in Kansas City, MO and later in Detroit and Dearborn, MI from 1952 through 1983.

After the death of Mary Frances in 1980, he married Phyllis Jean Beven Swartz in 1987. They lived in Troy, MI thereafter. Joel's hobbies were gardening, world travel and model railroading. Phyllis and Joel were members of the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak.
