Mary Hotchkiss, 84, of 950 Cross Ave. died Thursday, June 29, 2006.

She was born March 31, 1922, in Flushing, N.Y., the daughter of George Burton and Margaret Woodbury Hotchkiss. She was a World War II veteran of the Army Nurse Corps. She taught English for 29 years in Shaker Heights, Ohio. She retired to Madison in 1988, and volunteered for the Humane Society; Historic Madison Inc., training docents for the Doctor Hutchings Office; and at Clifty Convalescent Center, now The Waters of Clifty Falls. She was a member of the Madison Doll Society and the reading and discussions group at the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library.

She is survived by one sister, Margo Kyle-Keith of Bowie, Md., and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a twin brother; two sisters; and a second brother.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memorial Gardens. The Honor Guard of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion will conduct a graveside service.

There will be no visitation.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Mary Hotchkiss Nursing Scholarship Fund in care of Trina Tracy, Vision Financial Group, P.O. Box 646, Seymour, IN 47274. Contribution envelopes will be available a Vail-Holt Funeral Home Madison Chapel and at the cemetery.
