Don Dixon, 70, 5509 E. State Road 56, formerly of Vevay, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

He was born May 4, 1936, in Switzerland County, the son of Kirby Van and Laura Bell Osborne Dixon. He retired after 15 1/2 years of service as an electrical and instrumental technician with Elf Ato-Chem in Carrollton, Ky. He had worked previously at Rexnord in Madison for 23 years. He had served as a reserve deputy for the Switzerland County Sheriff's Department and the Vevay Town Police for 23 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and supporter and member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and IU basketball. He was active in his community and had served as treasurer of the Democratic Party, as precinct committeeman and on the advisory board. He also had served on the Switzerland County Senior Housing Board and was a member and active in the CAM Car Club in Madison. He was a member of the former Moorefield Church of Christ and attended First Christian Church of Hanover. He was first married in 1957 to Laura Ross.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara King Walters Dixon, whom he married Sept. 8, 2000; two daughters, Cindy Quick and Chris Bilz, both of Madison; one son, Tim Dixon of Madison; one step daughter, Catherine Walsh of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Robert Dale Walters of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight sisters, Madeleine Walters of Danville, Ky., Amy Lush of Louisville, Ky., Lettie Wilson of Madison, Etta Royce of North Vernon, Vonna Haines of North Vernon, Joyce Meredith of Mammoth Cave, Ky., Carolyn Altepeter of Seymour and Evelyn Rose of Vevay; four brothers, Harold Dixon of Madison, Gerald Dixon of Milton, Ky., Dale Dixon of Vevay and Keith Dixon of Kent; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Doris Johnson Dixon, whom he married June 5, 1972, and who died Jan. 8, 1998; three sisters, Betty Sue Sturtzel, Clara Marie Dixon and Laura Marie Dixon; one unnamed infant sister; and four brothers, Gail William Dixon, Mickey Wayne Dixon, Hubert Dixon and Kirby Wayne Dixon.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m.. Wednesday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Brooksburg Cemetery. Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396 will conduct full military honors at the grave.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday. The Switzerland County Sheriff's Department and Vevay Town Police will conduct an honor guard service Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Switzerland County Emergency Unit Endowment or to the Switzerland County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
