I took Dr. Shanklin's course in 1978 on placental pathology after 3 years in general community pathology practice. It hugely impacted me into a career-long local advocacy for postpartum placental pathology exams. He was considered a national expert and was author or co-author of books about placental pathology.

Dr. Shanklin was involved with the Marine Biology Lab at Woods Hole late in his career.

From daughter, Elizabeth: "My Dad died very suddenly from an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He was asymptomatic until just weeks before he died, when he developed very bad anemia. It was the need for transfusions that sent him to the hospital where his cancer was discovered. He didn't get the chance to say goodbye to many people or sort out his vast research records and materials."

Dr. Shanklin was a member of the MBL Corporation since 1970, a library researcher in 2001, 2010, and 2012, and an active library patron. The MBL flag will be lowered in his honor.
