I took Dr. Shanklin's course in 1978 on placental pathology after 3 years in general community pathology practice. It hugely impacted me into a career-long local advocacy for postpartum placental pathology exams. He was considered a national expert and was author or co-author of books about placental pathology.

Dr. Shanklin was involved with the Marine Biology Lab at Woods Hole late in his career.

From daughter, Elizabeth: "My Dad died very suddenly from an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He was asymptomatic until just weeks before he died, when he developed very bad anemia. It was the need for transfusions that sent him to the hospital where his cancer was discovered. He didn't get the chance to say goodbye to many people or sort out his vast research records and materials."

After an "In Memorium":
It is with much sadness that we share the news of the death of longtime MBL Corporation member Dr. Douglas Radford Shanklin, 82, who died with his family surrounding him on November 12, 2013 at Sibley Memorial Hospital, in Washington, DC, after a short battle with prostate cancer.

Dr. Shanklin was a member of the MBL Corporation since 1970, a library researcher in 2001, 2010, and 2012, and an active library patron. The MBL flag will be lowered in his honor. A funeral and burial will be held this Saturday, November 16, at 2:00 PM at the Church of the Messiah, 13 Church St., Woods Hole. Following a brief burial service in the adjoining cemetery, there will be a reception held from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the MBL’s Swope Center.

The Shanklin Family (Virginia, Elizabeth, John Carter, and Eleanor) have invited everyone who shared Dr. Shanklin’s professional and personal passions to honor his life by joining them at the service and reception and have said they would love to hear stories and anecdotes about him, whether you can attend or not. Elizabeth Shanklin may be reached at elizashanklin@gmail.com

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to support a medical education lecture series that Dr. Shanklin believed in and for which he was the inaugural lecturer: The Michelson Lectures (see obituary, above).
