Mr. Joseph Edward Townsend, 69, of 71 Stephen Road, Clinton, died Tuesday at his home.

Mr. Townsend, born in Roseboro, NC., was the son of the late Gurney Townsend and Josephine Faircloth Townsend and was preceded in death by his first wife Susan Faye Johnson Townsend August 16, 1993. He was raise in Cumberland County, joined the US Army in 1965 and served in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1968. He served as a preacher for a brief time after his discharge. He felt God had called him to another task, however, he began working in law enforcement. With his background, he showed tremendous concern and compassion for those in need of guidance. He married Ann Malcha Townsend, November 19, 1994. He was Chief of Police of Garland from 1969 to 1972. He joined the City of Clinton Police Department on July 31, 1972 as a patrolman, and retired August 31, 2000 as a Captain. During his tenure with Clinton, he earned his degree in Criminal Justice from Fayetteville Technical Institute and graduated from the Police Science Technology Course at Beaufort Technical Institute in Washington. He also studied Psychology. He had a love for horses, fishing and sports, especially Clinton Dark Horse Football, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed building mountain houses with his brother, Neil and his nephews Ed Townsend and Johnny Ammons. He is remembered fondly by his fellow police officers and other Clinton City employees. He was quick with a coupon and could always find a "great Deal". He always found time to sit and talk to people who needed an ear, and always had time to lend a helping hand to those that needed one. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Ann Malcha Townsend, children, Cindy Howry and husband Harold, Stephen Townsend and fiance' Lisa Osthues, Margaret Frederick and husband Andre, and Steven Tyndall and Shannon Smart, grandchildren, Marilyn Sessoms and husband Allen, Toby Howry, Stephen Fisher Townsend, Chancellor Frederick, Amelia Frederick and Apollo Frederick, great grandchildren, Skylar Renee Sessoms, extended great grandchildren, Min, Jin, and Ester Kim; sisters, Frances Maness and husband William, and Nannie Williams and brother, Neil Townsend and wife Patricia.

Family received friends following services.

Burial was made, with Military Honors, in Clinton City/Springvale Cemetery, Clinton, NC.

The family entrusted the care of Mr. Townsend to the Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home of Clinton, NC.
