The 1860 census recorded 16 year-old Martha Davis, born South Carolina (SC) living in Cowpens, Spartanburg,SC, with Jno. Davis, 45, born North Carolina (NC), Sarah Davis, 45, born SC, and other young Davises, likely siblings: Marshall, 21, and Lithy, 18, born NC; and Mildred, John, Foster, Sarah, and Benj. F., all born in SC.

Martha Jane Davis married James Madison Humphries, August 1, 1865, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. (Martha's application as indigent widow of a soldier or sailor of the "late Confederacy" for a pension from the State of Texas, Texas State Library and Archives Commission; Austin, Texas; Confederate Pension Applications, 1899-1975)

The 1870 census records J. M. and Martha "Humphreys" and 3 year-old son Robert B. living in Township #4 [King's Mountain], Cleveland County, North Carolina.

The 1880 census recorded Marth J., born in South Carolina (SC), living on a farm in Bastrop County, Texas, with husband James Humphries , also born in SC, and children: Robert B., 12, born in SC; Marshall, 9, born in SC; daughter Osie L., 6, born in Mississippi; and son Haller S., 3, born in Mississippi. The family apparently moved from South Carolina to Mississippi about 1871-1874, then on to Texas about 1876-1880. Also living in the home is John A. Davis, reported as brother to James, but he is evidently Martha's brother.

At least three more children, Ila, born October 1880, and twins Earnest and Orla, born September 1883, were born between the 1880 census and James' death in 1885.

The 1900 census recorded Martha living and farming in Bastrop County, Texas, with daughter Ila and son Orla.

The 1910 census records Martha living on a farm in the Elgin area of Bastrop County, Texas, with her daughter and son-in-law, Ila and Dave B. Lane.

The inscription organization and lettering on the monument indicate that it was probably erected after the 1901 death of Orla and before the death of Martha Humphries.
