CAPTAIN ENSIGN BAKER
Captain Ensign Baker, one of Falmouth's old-time whaling captains, died on Monday at the Pocasset sanatarium, where he had been having treatment for the past six weeks. A shock on Saturday, the second Captain Baker had suffered, hastened his death. Under treatment for overweight and a slight heart ailment he had been improving at the hospital until then.
Captain Baker was born in Cotuit 72 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Shubael Baker. He had lived in West Falmouth practically all of his life ashore. All of his active years were spent at sea. He shipped before the mast at 20 and advanced to be a captain of whalers. About 20 years ago he settled down on land, busying himself with work about boats on the waterfront. For the past 10 years he had retired from active work, he lived on Manamessett avenue; on the road toward Silver Beach. He had been a member of the Knights of Pythias but had dropped active membership some years ago.
Forty years ago Captain Baker married Miss Laura Martin of Boston, a sister of Mrs. Lewis Smith of Falmouth. They have no children. His wife survives him, and one brother, Hiram Baker, until recently of New York City but now a resident of West Falmouth. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the West Falmouth Methodist church. The Rev. Leslie F. Wallace, rector of St. Barnabas church, Falmouth, read the service. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Bearers were Owen Lumbert, James A. Bowman, Adrian Adams, and E. E. Kelley.
