E. Janette "Jan" Briggs, 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away in her sleep, on Monday, April 6, 2015.

Life:
She was born in Leachville, Arkansas, on September 24, 1931, the youngest child of the late John and Gertha Hawkins.
When she was very young, her family moved to Buchanan, Michigan.
After graduating from high school, she started clerical work at the Studebaker automobile company in South Bend, Indiana. It was there that she met Robert M. Briggs Jr. of Erie, Pennsylvania; they married on August 7th, 1954.
In May 1955, after moving to Port Huron, Michigan, Jan experienced the premature birth of triplet sons, (Thomas, Gerald, and James), all of whom died at or soon after their birth.
Their eldest surviving child, Robert M. III, was born there in December 1956.
The young family soon moved again, to Bob's hometown of Erie, where eventually John A. (1958), Douglas S. (1960), and Todd E. (1967), were born.
In Erie, Jan served as bookkeeper for Ernie Voss's IGA grocery store, located at the corner of 38th St. and Greengarden Blvd.
Later, she worked for the Haysite Corporation on Perry Highway, and in 1973, began working at Firetrol (a manufacturer of fire-pump controllers), where she would ultimately rise to the position of Controller.
Jan was an ardent Bridge player, rising to the level of Life Master and playing in tournaments most of her adult life. Jan also played golf and bowled, collected stamps for a time, and (perhaps more than anything else), loved to prepare meals in the kitchen.

Family:
She was preceded in death by all her siblings: three elder brothers, (Bernice, Orris, and Junius) and one sister, (Marie).
Jan is survived by her sons, Robert Briggs III of Lake City, Jack and Todd Briggs of Raleigh, N.C., and Douglas Briggs (and wife, Nancy) of Front Royal, Va.;
eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bayleaf Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27614.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bayleaf Baptist Church.
