Col. Smith Johns Williams of 88 Smith St., Charleston, South Carolina, a retired Citadel professor, died Thursday at a local hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Stuhr's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
Col. Williams was born November 5. 1880, in Essex County, Va, the third son of Pvt. William Arthur Williams and Mrs. Sarah Watts Williams. He had seven siblings, three brothers and four sisters.
He attended the public schools of Virginia, earned a bachelor's degree at William and Mary College and a master's degree from Columbia University. He joined The Citadel in 1910 as an assistant Professor of English and history.
When the department of history was separated from the English department, Mr. Williams initiated the original program and headed the department from 1922 to his retirement in 1946. He held the rank of colonel at the military school.
He was a member of Bethel Methodist Church, the American Historical Society, the South Carolina Historical Society and the South Carolina Historical Commission. He was also a Phi Beta Kappa.
Surviving were two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pryor Williams Rucker of Bedford, VA and Mrs. Sarah May Vosburgh Williams Davidson of Charlotte, NC. His wife, Mrs. Ruth O. Dyer Williams, of Charleston, SC, predeceased him.
