He was born on March 31, 1923 at home in West Union to George and Laura (Jacobsen) Alcorn.
He graduated from West Union High School and attend two years of college at Upper Iowa University.
Lavern proudly served his country in the United State Army Air Corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged after his plane was shot down in France during his seventh mission. Lavern opted to re-enlist and he flew another seventy-two missions during the war.
He was united in marriage to Marcia Rose Willsey on December 30, 1955 in Topeka, Kansas. The couple, along with their two children, made their home in West Union.
Lavern worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. Lavern travel over a million miles during his career.
He enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, reading, and coffee with friends. Lavern was a member of the American Legion Post 15 of West Union, Masonic Lodge of West Union, Historical Society of Fayette County, and the Selective Service System. He was an active life-long member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
