Doris Evelyn Abbey was born October 8, 1929 at Mott, the daughter of Marion and Flora (Waddell) Abbey. She graduated from Regent High School in 1948.
Doris married Rienhold Mattis on March 30, 1949 in Regent. They moved to New Leipzig, Hettinger and Haynes. They settled in Lemmon, S.D., where they remained for the next 30 years. In 1991, Rienhold and Doris made Dickinson their home. She resided at the Evergreen from 2010 until February of 2012 when she became a resident of the St. Luke’s Home.
Doris was a housewife, who raised her four children, Melvin, Cecilia, Byron, and Susan. She liked crocheting, latch hook, canvas work, jigsaw puzzles, and playing cards. She especially cherished spending time with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rienhold, on February 11, 1992; her parents; two sons, Melvin and Byron “Butch” Mattis; great-granddaughter, Amiah Smith; three brothers, Eugene, Donald, and Ronald Abbey; and two sisters, Lois Faye Hoffer and Beverly Irwin.
