Howard, the fourth son of John C. and Wilmina, grew up on the family farm four miles west of Andrew. On August 17, 1933, at age forty-six, Howard married Viola M. Cooley of Clinton, Iowa. They had three children: Frances Elizabeth, born 6/1/1934, died 3/29/2005; Carlyle Howard, born 7/10/1935; and Wilma Fay, born 5/29/1936. Their mother Viola died in 1953, leaving father Howard with three teenagers. Howard purchased the John C. Merritt farm in 1926 and remained there for the remainder of his life. He passed away in 1962 at age seventy-five. In 1965, the family farm was sold by the Merritt children, and with that the Merritt farm passed from the family.

Howard Merritt entered the US Army on May 26, 1918. He served during WWI with Company I, 352 Infantry, 88 Division, American Occupation Force in France from August 16/1918 through June 14, 1919. He was discharged from the service on June 14, 1919. His military serial number was 1,224,426.

Howard Merritt, 75 died Saturday, April 28, 1962, at a local nursing home in Maquoketa.

The funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the United church of Christ. The Rev. Bruce Dean, former Congregational minster, officiated and burial in the Andrew cemetery.
