One of Ellen's four brothers was the Reverend Alexander Hamilton Balentine, Sr. (1817-1876) Memorial# 8153368, this site. Reverend Balentine was a Presbyterian Missionary to the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory from 1844 to 1876 upon his death. He wrote about 17 hand-written letters to his only Sister, which are in the possession of Ellen's 2nd Great Granddaughters (Judith & Janet).

Her other Siblings were John E. Balentine (abt 1811-abt 1888); Samuel Balentine (abt 1814-2 Apr 1875); William "Willie" Balentine (1823-1898).

Both of their Parents died about 1823 and left them Orphaned, to be scattered to various families and/or orphanages in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and possibly, beyond. (Janet has not found records of their Parents; and only one record of where one brother, the Reverend Balentine, was sent to stay, at age six. The information about him was found online, in The Chronicles of Oklahoma.)

Per notations made by one of Ellen's Granddaughters, Lillian Dell (nee Parker); {Adopted name, Tompkins}; married names: Handwork (Widowed in 1921) and LeBaron. Ellen's husband, Joseph Parker, was born in England, came to America, and died "three days after the Battle of Gettysburg", in the U. S. Civil War.

Two 1870 U. S. Federal Census records in Chester County, Pennsylvania, show that Sarah Ellen and her only child, young son, Joseph Filmore Parker, Sr., were separated and had to live with and work for different families to stay alive. Joseph was aged 13 and a farm laborer for the Stephen Webb Family. Sarah Ellen, aged 49.5, was a domestic servant for the hotel owner/hostler, Joseph Smith and his family.

Photo of a very sentimental Victorian poem! This Memorial Card states she was aged 76 at her death in 1893, but that would have made her birth about 1817, which was not the case. Her brother, Reverend Alexander Hamilton Balentine Sr. was born January 1817, and her Birth Date is recorded as 14 Dec 1821. The headstone Birth Year's last digit is hard to read.

The Memorial Card for Widow, Sarah Ellen (nee Balentine) Parker reads:

In Loving Remembrance of

Sarah E. Parker,
Died Dec. 8, 1893,
Aged 76 Years.

One less at home!
The charmed circle broken---a dear face,
Missed day by day from its usual place,
But cleansed, saved, perfected by grace,
One more in heaven.

One less on earth!
Its pain, its sorrow and its toil to share,
One less the pilgrim’s daily cross to bear,
One more the crown of the blest to wear,
At home in heaven!
