Winchester - Hettie Leah Carriger, 70, of Winchester, died Tuesday morning, May 27, 2003, at Modern Care Convalescent Facility in Jacksonville.

She was born Aug. 15, 1932, in Scott County, the daughter of Darwin S. and Madaline J. Blair Carriger.

She is survived by two sisters, Helen (husband, Wilbur) Coats of Winchester and Sheryl Brooks of St. Peters, Mo.; eight brothers, Harley (wife, Betty) of Burlington, W. Va., Herschel (wife, Norma) of Chapin, Harold (wife, Joann) of Jacksonville, Hal (wife, Kathy) of Sanford, N.C., Henry (wife, Linda) of Bellevue, Neb., Jack (wife, Vicki) of Augusta, Howard (wife, Karen) of Pittsfield, and Herbert (wife, Sheri) of Winchester; and several nieces and nephews.

Miss Carriger attended various country schools in Scott and Greene Counties. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1950. She received her accounting degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She worked for various accounting firms in the St. Louis area until she established her own tax and accounting office in Woodson Terrace in 1992. She retired in October of 1997 returning to Winchester to be near her family and friends. She was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church. She enjoyed the companionship of her family, participating in sports and yard work.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Glasgow Baptist Church, with burial at Glasgow Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester, where the family will meet with friends from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association or to the Winchester EMS.
